Festival season is finally among us and 2013 was kicked off by the mighty Coachella, setting the bar high for the festival look and not a wellie in sight. The first leg of the Californian music event kicked off last weekend with tribes of music lovers, partygoers and – as you’d expect from LA – fashionastas gathering to enjoy the likes of Blur, The Stone Roses and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. We won’t lie, we’re very jealous.
Still somewhat traumatised from last year’s mud soaked music events, we remember the tragedies all too clearly. The mud-caked sandals, our rain frizzled hair trying to do its thing in a dripping bandana and most of all the outfits, our poor poor outfits all covered up in big green plastic smocks.
It was a difficult time for every-one involved but no such style troubles befell our Californian friends, and we watched with baited breath (and purses) as they revealed how the hipsters are rocking out this summer.
Vanessa Hudgens, kudos to you for doing festival and not being afraid to go all out. Top marks to anyone brave enough to sport a bindi and head beads, go all out tie-die and look hot in it too! Some might say cliché, overdone, whatever. Wearing tie-die at a festival is like parading a giant Rudolph jumper at Christmas – unashamedly bold; We love it. Paris Hilton accessorises her outfit to a (tie died) T while Bella Thorne does hippy in a flower head band. It’s the kind of thing you could really only wear to a festival (or a turn of the century maypole dance,) but she carries it off in a toned down mesh vest and high waist jeans.
Dianne Kruger glammed it up with red lippy, loose hair and little mini. Cute all round and a good look for those of us careful enough to reapply, unfortunately I’m not one of those. The last time my lipstick made an appearance at a festival, it ended up on my forehead. I still don’t know how.
Katy Perry- wow, just wow. Festival time is all about being different and we have no idea where one sources a pineapple bag but we want one. It’s kind of like Hawaiian hula dancer meets 50’s siren. The white patent platforms are very brave, as it the full blown midriff. Hope you got the factor 30 out Kay-P!
Reigning style crush Alexa Chung did Wednesday Adams…. because she can! Might have been a tad sweaty in those long sleeves, but we love the Mary Jane’s, white Peter-Pan collar and pink retro Raybans.
So there you have it, some channelled hippy, some did rock chick some did nothing at all, but the one thing they all had in common was a good pair of sunnies! Proving that you can make just about anything look festival-chic with hot shades (even a big ole’ plastic waterproof cape… at a push.)
